What is Chiro?

Chiropractic was created in 1895 by Dr D.D Palmer

Chiropractic care is a Primary integrated part of the healthcare system which forms part of conservative methods which are an alternative to usage of drugs and surgery. Chiropractors are one of the fifteen registered healthcare professions in Australia and study for at least 5 years. Consumers are more widely seeking a Chiropractor in Australia and around the world as an important part of their ongoing healthcare. Each year there is an estimated 19.1 million chiropractic visits in Australia and other studies suggest that 8.6% of all visits are from children.

Chiropractors typically use hands-on spinal manipulation called an ‘adjustment’ and other alternative treatments such as muscle releases, stretches and treatment tools. Proper alignment of the body's musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, enables the body to heal itself in certain instances without surgery or medication. The aim is to treat the cause, not the symptom!

The Adjustment uses the bones as levers to create ideal movement and function where it has been dysfunctional, which can cause neurological and muscular stress. Dysfunction may occur due to tissue injury caused by a traumatic event, such as falling, or repetitive stress, such as sitting without proper back support.

The nervous system controls every single organ and function in the body. If a nearby joint or tissue is dysfunctional, it may create change or damage to the nerve. The muscles hang off bones (except the ones that make you smile!) and nerves tell muscles what to do. This means that if joints and nerves are dysfunctional, so may be the muscles.

Chiropractic treatment is used as a spinal alignment correction tool, and as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. It is sometimes used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment. Techniques use quick but small movements to stretch tight areas, break up scar tissue and decompress joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

+

An ‘Adjustment’ is the application of a precise force to a specific part of the involved spinal segment, using the hands, instrument, blocks or drop piece, (often accompanied by an audible ‘pop’) to restore optimal joint function leading to improved movement and normal nerve transmission.

Are Chiropractic adjustments safe?

+

Scientific reviews of the literature report that spinal manipulation is one of the safest approaches for spine pain. As there are many technique options for delivering an adjustment, your Chiropractor will choose the appropriate techniques based on your age, size, condition, and preference, allowing safe and effective treatment.

Will I have to get X-rays?

Not necessarily. Your Chiropractor 1st assesses your condition which will determine if x-rays are necessary. The purpose of attaining X-ray images is to help evaluate your structural alignment, assess the degree of longer-term degeneration, and exclude underlying pathology and/or trauma. These images can provide valuable and sometimes necessary information to address your health issues. If you are pregnant you will not be referred for X-rays. Pediatric patients will not be referred for X-rays unless deemed medically necessary.X-ray imaging is usually bulk-billed through Medicare. The closest location to get your X-rays is a 3min drive from the practice at QScan.

Will I have to go to a Chiropractor forever?

+

Your Chiropractor will give you his best and honest recommendation for your presenting condition, however, how you choose to go forward with your spinal care is always up to you!Your Dr will educate you on the differences between alleviating pain, improving function, to allowing your body to achieve and maintain optimal health and well-being.

Do Chiropractors only treat people with back pain?

+

Chiropractors treat every joint in the body, but the most important are the ones in the spine as they affect the entire nervous system. This means that it can affect more than just one part of the body and more than just pain!

Just as you would get your teeth checked by a dentist for cavities you didn’t know about, or take your car to the mechanic for a service to keep it functioning at its best, Chiropractors recommend regular maintenance check-ups of your spine to detect joint movement problems before they become painful or cause an interruption to your nervous system.

Dysfunction of the spinal joints can happen silently and pain is often the last symptom to appear – so keeping it tuned up helps to prevent this.

Why do Chiropractors see children and babies?

+

Children have spines just like adults! An assessment will determine if the child has any spinal dysfunction which could lead to abnormal movement patterns or neurological stress which may have health implications.

Do Chiropractors treat pregnant women?

+

Yes, a modified treatment plan may be required for a pregnant woman, but studies show a large majority of women who receive Chiropractic care enjoy reductions in pain and experience and easier birthing process.

Can I have Chiropractic care after spinal surgery?

+

Yes, depending on where the spinal surgery has taken place, a careful assessment must take place to address adjacent segmental dysfunction. Treatment of other areas of the spine will still be important for maintaining the lifespan of the joints. The are of spinal surgery may not be directly treated in some cases.
